Many of our driving positions require a hazmat endorsement, which may seem like a daunting and difficult process. We're here to lay out exactly what you need to know about the hazmat endorsement, how to apply for it, and how we can help in the process. First, let's go through some commonly asked questions about hazmat endorsements.
What is a hazmat endorsement?
A hazmat endorsement (HME) is a certification that allows commercial drivers to transport hazardous materials in the United States.
Why is a hazmat endorsement needed?
A hazmat endorsement is required by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) in order for a driver to transport any cargo that is labeled as "hazardous materials." The endorsement is required because the materials classified as "hazardous" pose safety and environmental risks if not handled and transported correctly and with the proper care and precaution.
What kind of freight is classified as hazardous material?
Hazardous materials are classified into nine different classes based on the type and the risk that type poses. Each class has different handling, transportation, and labeling requirements.
How much does it cost to obtain a hazmat endorsement?
The TSA hazmat endorsement costs $86.50, but the following states: Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin, have different application processes that may incur additional fees. In the presentation below, we have attached links to these states' hazmat endorsement application process. However, if you are already an Averitt associate wishing to obtain your hazmat, or hired with a contingency of you getting your hazmat endorsement, we will reimburse you the cost associated with obtaining your hazmat endorsement.
How do you apply for a hazmat endorsement?
We have created a short video presentation that takes you through the step-by-step process. Click the image to watch and learn exactly how you can apply for your hazmat endorsement!
